Plant Strawberries

What’s eating my strawberries and how can I stop them?

Question by cher_lady: What’s eating my strawberries and how can I stop them?
This is the first time I have grown strawberries, and I have planted them in a pot, they are just turning red, and I have noticed the lovely big juicy one that I was soo excited about picking and eating has been nibbled!!!!! Well, I say nibbled, there are several tunnels in it, and i’m GUTTED.
Please, does anyone know what is causing this, and how I can stop it??? I intend to plant these strawberries out into a bit of my garden that I have dug over, so any tips on how to keep the pests away once I have done that would be helpful too – preferably organic tips!
Thanking you in advance!!!

The tunnels were probably made by a bird with a long beak like a mockingbird or bluejay. Animals like squirrels or rabbits will leave teeth marks and the berries will look chewed. Putting plastic mesh over it will help but some will still manage to get under it.

Birds love strawberries. You need a wire mest tent over them. BUMMER I know.

I know how you feel. I have had my vegetable garden treated like a buffet by animals and birds.
They even go under the ground and chew carrots and other root vegetables.

This is what I did this year. I planted a border of marigold, then an inner border of jalapeno pepper/garlic/cilantro(in an alternating pattern ) and then all my precious vegetables. I even put up the halloween doll just in case.

They say deer, squirrels and bunnies hate the smell of garlic and some herbs. Ducks and wild Turkeys(man! they can be mean!) are scared of big human dolls or dog cut-outs. So far the plants are growing without any hitch. I kept the strawberries and otehr herbs on my kitchen window.

If your strawberry pot is small, you can keep it indoors near a window that recieves direct sunlight.

    Good luck
