Question by Alex: My strawberry plant wilted, and there are small flying bugs around it.?
So, I’ve had a small thriving garden up in my room for the past 2 weeks now. My Mom’s chive and basil plants weren’t doing so hot, so I brought them upstairs. From what I’ve researched, the reason they wilted was because of thrips. I have bought some insecticidal soap and sprayed it all over the plants and in the dirt. Nothing has come of it yet, but I don’t want these plants to die.

More about the bugs. They’re small, maybe 1/8th to 1/4 inches long, bury into and come out of the dirt, and have wings. They are also brown, and have eaten numerous of my plant’s leaves.

Does anybody know if there could be another reason these plants wilted? I’m positive it’s the bugs since the strawberry plant was doing fine before, and I saw them flying around and in it. No signs of leaf damage though, and the soil was very dry even though I had watered it just last night.

You have to dig up your strawberry plant and check its roots. Most likely its the bugs. I’m guessing from what you have told me, they are thrip bugs. You should use some insecticide and throw away that soil. Repot your plants to get rid of the bugs. You can get more information on growing strawberries from Growing Strawberries Guide.

Try about a teaspoon of Murphy’s Oli Soap in a spray bottle with water. Mist the plant a couple times a day, and the bugs will get tired of it and go find someone elses strawberries to invade.

i wouldn’t recommend using pesticides for ur plants cause it could contaminate them so maybe you can build a glass wall around ur plants with a plastic covering it and water it and let sunlight go through? don’t cover it too tight though… good luck and hope ur strawberries taste gooood

Question by jeffwalker_1: I am trying to grow strawberry plant. What are the major bugs and diseases, I need to watch out for?
I have these 1 centimeter little bugs that look like miniture centipedes in my strawberry plant. What the heck is that thing and is it bad, should I get rid of it.

When I first planted plant, some of my leaves got some black dots and streaks on it. What was that? And when I bought my strawberry plant at store, it was kinda fuzzy. Now, the fuzz is going away from the leaves and stems…is that bad?

PLEASE HELP, I need my plant to grow.

Where we live in east Texas, snails and slugs are the biggest problem. We used to have the same problem in Houston.
