Mulch the patch for the winter. That’s all I ever do. Sometimes I forget. I’m in zone 5, and they’ve never failed to grow the following year, even when I neglect them.

I live in zone 6 and my berries are planted on a slight incline where the north wind blows in the winter so I mulch pretty heavy and put netting over the top to keep it from blowing away since you live in zone 4 and it gets pretty cold there I would also mulch heavy and if it’s in a northerly direction put a little extra on. Do it before the first freeze because if you don’t you’ll be mulching the cold around them.
I use about 10 inches of loose straw.(not hay it has seeds)
    Good Luck!
Just a tip if you like artichokes try those they grow quite well in cooler weather.

For just a little bit of strawberry trivia: The reason they’re called strawberries is because in order to protect the berry plants from harsh winters, farmers used to cover the plants with straw. Personally, I put mulch around the plant, especially by the crown–rotting leaves are good organic compost and the berries love’em.
